Personification
Personification is a figure of speech giving human qualities to animals or objects. Although anthropomorphism and personification share a good deal in common, we'll look at them independently. For our purposes (and some will disagree), personification is primarily a figure of speech (ie, the wind howled; the snowflakes falling lazily) whereas anthropomorphism is not so much a figure of speech as it is the creating of a character with human traits out of something that is non-human. Here are a few examples of personification from poems found in Tall Tales of the Wild West (And a Few Short Ones).

A Cowboy's Lullaby

The wolf on the hill as he cries to the moon,...
...the snap of the campfire...
The whispering wind...
...the babbling stream as it runs...

Her Darling Valentine

...swept a shadow...
