Simile & Metaphor
Simile is a figure of speech in which two essentially different things are compared, often (though not always) in a phrase using the words like or as. Here are several examples of simile as taken from poems found in When You're a Pirate Dog and Other Pirate Poems and from Tall Tales of the Wild West (And a Few Short Ones).

For our purposes, Metaphor is also a figure of speech in which two essentially different things are compared, but in this case it is done without the use of like or as. In effect, we end up saying one thing is something else. Here are a few examples of metaphor as taken from poems found in When You're a Pirate Dog and Other Pirate Poems and from Tall Tales of the Wild West (And a Few Short Ones).
