“The Armadillo” Poetry Theater
Adapted from the poem by Eric Ode
Summary: While riding the trails, a cowboy finds a surprise in his boot.
Presentation Suggestions: Have the students read or perform the poem in front of the class. Have the students act out the different lines while they read them.
Props: A cowboy hat or bandana and a pair of boots for the cowboy would make great props. A pair of construction paper ears for the armadillo plus a rope tail would be fun. Of course, the poem can be performed without props and costumes.
Characters:
Narrator - Sheldon - Armadillo
The Armadillo
Sheldon:
“Hold up just a minute, boys,”
Narrator:
said Sheldon with a shout.
Sheldon:
“I think there’s something in my boot,
so let me dump it out.”
Narrator:
He slipped down from his saddle,
and he sat beneath a willow.
And there inside his cowboy boot
he found an armadillo.
Sheldon:
“Well, blow me down!”
Narrator:
The cowboy said.
Sheldon:
I knew that things were wrong.
I hope, my friend, you don’t intend
to stay there very long.”
Armadillo:
“I wouldn’t dare,”
Narrator:
The critter said.
Armadillo:
“for near as I can tell,
I might survive the crowded fit,
but surely not the smell!”
